Packaging Types

Flat Pouches
Flat pouches are a cost-effective packaging solutions for coffee. They are typically made from flexible materials such as plastic, aluminum foil, or kraft paper, sealed on three sides, with a top seal that is either heat-sealed or resealable. They are space efficient for storage and shipping but unable to stand up on store shelving by themselves.

Stand-Up Pouches
Stand-up pouches feature a bottom gusset that expands when filled, allowing them to stand upright for better shelf presentation. Most stand-up pouches come with a zipper closure, ensuring freshness is maintained after opening. They can also include a degassing valve, if desired. Compared to flat pouches, stand-up pouches can be more expensive due to their structured design.

Gusseted Bags
Gusseted bags, or quad seal bags, are designed for extra durability and structure making these bags suitable for heavier coffee volumes. Large printable surfaces allow for detailed designs and brand visibility. They usually include a tin tie and degassing valve, but can be customized to include zipper instead. This is the most common coffee bag type on the market.

Flat Bottom Bags
Flat bottom bags, also called box bottom pouches, are one of the most structured coffee bags available. They feature a reinforced base that allows them to stand upright and maintain their shape, making them ideal for premium coffee brands. Most frequently equipped with one-way degassing valves and resealable zippers to maintain coffee quality. These bags require more material and complex manufacturing processes leading to a higher price point.

Die Cut or Custom Shape Pouches
Beyond standard packaging formats, some brands choose custom-shaped bags to make a statement and differentiate their coffee in a competitive market. Custom shapes can be optimized for storage, shipping, or special promotions.
Material Types
Standard Mylar Plastic
Material: Mylar is a brand name for stretched polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film, often laminated with other layers for durability.
Properties:
- Highly durable, resistant to tears and punctures.
- Excellent barrier against oxygen, moisture, and light, making it ideal for preserving coffee beans and other perishables.
- Can be heat-sealed to ensure an airtight closure.
Kraft Paper
Material: A combination of kraft paper and plastic, typically polyethylene (PE) or polylactic acid (PLA).
Properties:
- Combines the natural, rustic look of kraft paper with the durability of plastic
- Provides moderate protection against moisture and air (less than mylar).
- Often features a matte finish for an eco-friendly aesthetic.
Compostable Paper
Material: Made from plant-based materials like polylactic acid (PLA) or other bio-polymers designed to break down in composting conditions.
Properties:
- Designed to decompose into organic matter in industrial composting facilities (some may also decompose in home compost systems, depending on certification).
- Provides a moderate barrier against air and moisture (not as strong as mylar or kraft-plastic combinations).
- Can be heat-sealed, but with slightly lower heat resistance.
